The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Every November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed… There are, then, circumstances where it is clear that being a woman equates to being a potential victim—a designated target, the eternal “Other” to be dominated and subjugated.
Yet, in a broader sense, what does it mean to be a woman? The question is simple, but the sheer variety of possible answers is dizzying. I believe we would gain a great deal by taking the time to discuss this topic; we would better understand what unites us and the differences that enrich us. Even though gender stereotypes are largely imposed upon us from the outside—and our biological gender (possessing a vagina and breasts) has led society to steer us toward specific roles—there are infinite variations in how each of us plays with these codes and expectations, choosing to embrace some with pleasure or determination while rejecting others. What a wonderful diversity exists within the world of women! I look forward to discovering the women you are. And yet, the fact that we have chosen to come together suggests we are aware of a shared mission. Is it merely a need for togetherness and mutual support? Perhaps. But it seems to me that we have greater ambitions, too. I look forward to gaining a better understanding of what you dream of achieving.
