SUMMARY:Women's Wisdom Circle: Rematriating Society
DESCRIPTION:Rematriation is an initiative conceived\, shaped\, and led by Native American Women to “return the Sacred to the Mother”. \nHere are some personal reasons why I wanted to propose we learn about this movement: \nWhen people ask me where home is I usually hesitate awkwardly\, and eventually say something like\, “everywhere and nowhere”.  This unsettles me more and more as I grow older and more aware of the ways of the world. I know very little about my roots and lineage; nor have I ever felt “rooted in place.” In fact\, I’d call myself a bit of a floater; perhaps even a lost soul. \nThe culture I grew up in centered stories and ideals of winners and losers\, airbrushed youthful beauty\, glorified violence (often taken as entertainment)\, pornified sex\, and idealized financial power and prestige juxtaposed disturbingly alongside realities of barely surviving. \nI learned that men were not to be trusted\, and that one way or another\, they were always on top. \nAnd I learned that any worthwhile wisdom came from books\, experts\, and authorities.  Even knowledge about my own body!!! \nMy instincts often led me to the fringes of this culture\, but even here it is hardly possible not to be thoroughly saturated by myriad means of education\, entertainment\, and what’s generally accepted as “normal”. \nLearning about matriarchal societies of the past and present\, “Old Europe” according to Marjia Gimbutas\, the significance of the European Witch Hunts as a pivotal moment in history\, and ideas such as the Maternal Gift Economy revealed perspectives that finally made sense to me.  Every cell in my body said\, “yep\, there’s something here; something compelling\, familiar\, and true.” And\, I knew in my heart\, womb\, and soul that in this rich and multidimensional body of women’s wisdom\, there is tangible possibility and hope for a new way forward. \nFor those of us thousands of years conditioned by patriarchy\, capitalism\, and empire\, the search for our roots and the lived wisdom of peaceful ways can be elusive\, arduous\, and even frustrating. For me it feels like an incredible blessing and gift that indigenous women around the world are leading the way and sharing their wisdom. \nHere is the material to study for this Wisdom Circle:\nIn a recorded salon hosted by the Maternal Gift Economy Movement on October 24\, 2024\, Pat McCabe (Diné)\, Sherri Mitchell (Penobscot)\, and Vicki Noble discussed “Rematriating Society”.  The presenter bios can be accessed on the event page.  https://www.maternalgifteconomymovement.org/salon-71-rematriating-society/. \n***Please watch the salon before our gathering\, so we can come right into dialogue.  Make notes about what touches and inspires you\, and bring questions to share with the group.*** \nHere are a few inquiries to get us started:\n\nWhat do you know of your roots?  What do we know of our roots?\nWhat does it mean to be “rooted in place”?\nIn what ways do our culture\, our social system\, and our daily behaviors “center life”?\nHow does the way we live\, now and historically\, separate us and others from the sacredness of life?\nSherri Mitchell speaks to the process men are going through to reconnect to the sacred\, and how women are supporting them. How can we support the men in our lives to heal from the ways that they’ve been separated from the sacredness of life?\nVicki Noble suggests that we European women need to find ways to support the work and activism of indigenous women.  In what ways can we support their efforts?\nHow can indigenous womens’ example and teachings of rematriation inform and inspire our own activism and cultural recovery?\n\nIf you wish to delve deeper\, there are many articles\, videos\, and websites online that offer education about rematriation.  This is a website with much to offer:  https://www.rematriation.org/ \nHostess/facilitator:  Jennifer \nLogistics:\nDate:  Wednesday\, May 6\, 2026\nTime:  6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.\nPlace:  Armenoi\nCost:  Free\nWhat to bring:  A light and healthy dish to share.  Please let us know what you’ll bring so we can coordinate a balanced menu and prevent waste. \nPlease review our Wisdom Circle Agreements before we gather.\nPlease RSVP:  councilformatriarchalarts@gmail.com \nWelcome to the Circle
