SUMMARY:Wisdom Circle: Sheela Na Gig
DESCRIPTION:Picture: Sheela in Bunratty Castle wall  \nI can’t remember when I first read about Sheela Nagigs but I have been fascinated by them ever since!  Usually small\, they are  stone carvings depicting a woman’s face\, arms and legs. There is no body but only a large vulva being held open by the woman’s arms.  Dating from the Middle Ages they are a mystery and interpreted in different ways by different sources.  They can be found in only a few  countries; the most are in Ireland; but there are also lots in  Wales and England.  Only a very few in Scotland but there are some in France and Spain.  Sadly\, many which are still in place have been damaged by the years and the weather; some are now in museums. \nThis year I was fortunate enough to combine this deep but unexplained interest with the blessed opportunity of spending mother daughter time – with my youngest daughter (we live in different countries now) we flew to the west of Ireland and spent a lovely five days visiting various Sheela Nagigs – a spiritual tour of many layers.  It was fascinating to see the faces of the women who asked us about our trip – nobody has heard of these seemingly secret carvings!!  \n \nIn this circle we will  look at various examples of Sheelas\, and delve into the different theories of why they were made\, and why many of them were hidden.  We will think about the meaning of the name and its significance. I will be inviting everyone to contribute their thoughts  about why these strange depictions of women were carved\, why they were placed where they are and what this teaches us about the world then and now.  Perhaps we will discover present day Sheelas\, in modern forms !! \nwww.britannica.com/art/Sheela-Na-Gig\nwww.youtube.com/watch/Harvey
